Spiritual Sunday: Friendship

I just thought this quote was cute. Not all of us were blessed with good strong family relationships and the fact still remains that as humans we need to be loved, accepted, uplifted, and nurtured by others. Friends are the special people in our lives that do this without any obligation. Unlike families who are 'supposed' to fill these roles, friends do it because they love you for you and they choose it.

I have been so blessed in my life to have some pretty amazing friends. These strong, passionate, and hopeful women have been like angels sprinkled throughout my life. Friends have always been important to me. We moved quite a bit when I was growing up, making a slow pilgrimage across Florida, to Oklahoma, then to Idaho. I used to loathe that first day of school, having to be new. I always felt like Alice staring through the looking glass, a strange outsider peeking into world where there never seemed to be any space for me in it. I have spoken often the prayer for God to grant me a single friend and I have always received the answer of a loving friendship, sometimes from unlikely sources. These amazing friendships have brought me joy, peace, and comfort along with a great deal of fun and memories.

This life is hard and friends are just one more way God has provided a way for us to make our way through. Thanks to all  my  friends who have lifted me up and comforted me when I needed it most, often in just small and simple ways that have made all the difference.

"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. "
— 4:9-10

Spiritual Sunday: Anyway...

"If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; BE KIND ANYWAY.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends, and some true enemies; BE SUCCESSFUL ANYWAY.

If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you; BE HONEST AND SINCERE ANYWAY.

What you spend years creating, others may tear down overnight; CREATE ANYWAY.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous; BE HAPPY ANYWAY.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten tomorrow; DO IT ANYWAY.

In the final analysis, it's between you and God; IT WAS NEVER ABOUT YOU AND THEM ANYWAY."

~Mother Teresa

Spiritual Sundays: It's a Tilt A Whirl Life Out There

Whoa! Someone stop this thing and let me out!

I haven't done a Spiritual Sunday post in a while. I getbusy and forget and I also kind of feel guilty about posting and not having time to read and comment on everyone's great posts for Spiritual Sunday. That is kind of what my post is about.

Sometimes we get a little overwhelmed, busy, and ahead of ourselves...especially women. We think we should have and do it all. We hear about what others are doing in their lives and feel guilty that we are not doing those things too. These are usually good things like serving others and beautifying the world. How can all these good things be bad for us?

An old friend send me this poem a while back-

"The Girl in a Whirl"

Look at me, look at me, look at me now!
You could do it too, if you only knew how.
I study the scriptures one hour each day,
I bake, I upholster, I scrub, and I pray.
I always keep all the commandments completely.
I speak to my little ones gently and sweetly,
I help in their classrooms, I sew all they wear.
I drive them to practice, I cut all their hair.
I go to the temple at least once a week.
I change the car's tires and fix the sink's leak.
I'm taking a class on the teachings of Paul.
But that is not all, oh no, that is not all!

I play the piano and work on my talents.
My life is a wonder of fullness and balance.
I read to my children, I help all my neighbors.
I bless my community, too, with my labors.
Our family home evenings are always delightful,
The lessons I give are both fun and insightful.
I do genealogy faithfully, too.
It's easy to do all the things that I do.
I have a home business to help make some money.
I always look beautifully groomed for my honey.
My visiting teaching is done the first day.
I exercise, and I cook menus gourmet.
I can garden produce each summer and fall.
But that is not all, oh no, that is not all!
"It's easy," she said,
And then she dropped dead!

WOW! Are you exhausted reading that? I am.

Do you remember the time Jesus visited Mary and Martha?

Luke 10:38-42

38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

These verses are sometimes hard to understand because what Martha was doing was not bad, but what she wasn't doing had more eternal consequences.

I'd love to think that I would have been Mary soaking up the Saviors words. But my personality dictates that I would have most likely been Martha whirling around making sure everything was just perfect for our honored guest. I struggle daily to be a more like Mary and to put the most important things first. It's a battle though that I keep fighting within myself.

How do I avoid the whirl? How do I  know what things are most important? There is huge power in personal revelation. Praying, scriptures, and asking God what HE wants from your life, not what the world demands of it, is the easiest way I know of staying focused and balanced. The moment I start whirling around like the lady in this poem, I lose track of what is really important-the needful things. Everyone is different and everyone circumstances, talents, and purpose is different. The things others can do I cannot, letting go of this guilt and letting God direct my path is so important to me.

Anyway...the Girl in a Whirl  poem has always been a great reminder to me, to stop whirling around and make sure I'm on the right track and I thought it might inspire you too.

Spiritual Sundays: U-turns are OK

I loved this thought and wanted to share:

""I am very aware that there are some of you who don’t feel virtuous or who have made mistakes. That is why a return to virtue is so important. You must know that you can return. You can change.

If I were going the wrong way in the middle of a marathon, and I realized my mistake, would I keep going? I would immediately turn around! Why? Because I would have lost valuable time and precious energy and strength, and it would be much harder for me to finish the marathon because of this extra distance and added time. I wouldn’t stay on the wrong course because no matter how long I ran there, I would never reach the finish line.

And yet for many who have made a moral mistake, a little voice keeps saying:

“You blew it. You can’t change. No one will ever know anyway.” To you I would say, Don’t believe it. “Satan wants you to think that you cannot repent, but that is absolutely not true” (For the Strength of Youth [2001], 30).

A return is always possible because of the Savior’s Atonement.

(by Elaine S. Dalton “You Can Return,” New Era, Mar 2010, 10–12)"

Spiritual Sundays: By Small and Simple Things

Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise. And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.  Alma 37 6-7

I have been blessed in my life to to not be the receiver of grand miracles from God, but the receiver of millions of small and simple acts of kindness and love. They have been like little hugs from my Heavenly Father. We often remember these small kindnesses for a lifetime.  The effect of simple acts of kindness transcend religion, race, and culture. A smile, a polite gesture, a simple act of service, a kind word all communicate a Christ-like love to others.

I loved this story of a small and simple act of kindness: Bozeman officer buys groceries for shoplifting suspect

Spiritual Sundays: Christ in Art

As an artist myself, I believe wholly in the spiritual connection of art with its creator and those viewing it. No other medium allows such freedom of expression with no real limits and allows the viewer to interpret the art on a purely spiritual level. Art speaks to people. It tells a story, it has a message, and it expresses emotion, it is personal and interpretive. No wonder there have been so many depictions of Christ throughout the centuries, his message resonates with all times and cultures.

My favorite aspect of biblical art is the fact that regardless of how Christ is depicted in a piece of art you can always tell it is Christ. This is because through the artist and the viewer the Holy Spirit works to testify of Christ. It's truly miraculous.

Spiritual Sundays: Door Number 1 or Door Number 2?

Do you remember the old Lets Make a Deal game show? You had to pick a door at random and hope there was a fabulous new car behind it or a dream vacation package and not something ridiculous like a cow in sunglasses.
Well in so many ways life is just like Let's Make A Deal. Life is full of many choices...too many. We try our hardest to pick the right doors in order to find the perverbial 'prize' on the other side.
Are we to blindly just point and choose doors and hope for the best in life?

Thankfully we have a loving Heavenly Father who
#1 gives us the great blessing of agency-the capacity to make our own choices
and
#2 resources to help us make those tricky decisions

If we follow the commandments and pray about our choices asking for personal revelation and the direction of the Holy Ghost we don't have to pick at random. He does not force our hand or reveal the prizes-he merely offers the freedom to choose and the assurance of peace if we choose Him.

How can you go wrong with guaranteed prize on the other side of that door?

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord
Joshua 24:15

Spiritual Sundays: Family Scripture Reading

For our family scripture reading we are reading through the Old Testament this year. We are using the Storied Scriptures schedule from the School of Abraham website. It a very handy checklist that breaks the readings down into verses that follow a story format. Most reading are 1 chapter or less, so it takes up maybe 15 minutes tops to read through them. I have three boys that are reading age now. With Levi on the phone, we all take turns reading two verses each. Levi accesses the scriptures online with his laptop. It has turned out to be a nice system.

I love that the boys are more independent now in their reading and can participate. It is nice to hear them read and understand the gospel more as they grow up. I know it may seem strange, but I am always surprised by how much they know. Over the past 11 years I've often felt like I was talking to a wall, as the boys stared off into space, hung upside down on the couch, or poked one another through Family Scripture Time. It seems they were listening after all!

Anyway, I just wanted to say how grateful I am for the family God have given me. What a blessing it is for us to read God's word together as a family. It touches my heart so much.Today in Sunday School we talked about how Heavenly Father gave us families and how we are his children too. One of the little girls eyes just lit up with the idea of her family and how someday she can have her own family and be a mother. I remember wanting a family of my own as a little girl, and now I am a wife and mother . It is so much more wonderful and so much harder than I ever imagined it would be. I have a loving Father in heaven who helps me every step of the way as I mother my children-His children.

Spiritual Sundays: The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.
~ Melody Beattie

I am short on time to make my Spiritual Sunday post, but I wanted to write something today. I am short on time becuase my husband Levi is home today. We haven't seen him in almost 2 weeks. He is working as a long-haul truck driver. He has been doing it for a year now, due to some job losses and financial issues. I am very grateful he has this job, even though it can be a hard life. Many people ask me about how I can do it. How can I stand having my husband gone for so long, raising four boys practically alone? I tell you it is not of my own strength that I do this, I am NOT alone. I give great gratitude to my Heavenly Father and to my Savior Jesus Christ, without the gifts and comfort of the Holy Ghost, I would not be able to bear it.

This quote is my one of my very favorite. It sums up my life I think. I have never had anything come easily to me in life, it seems that it has been a constant struggle. I'm sure it is that way for many people.  I won't bore you with all my trivial trials and circumstances, but I can tell you one thing, that gratitude is clearly the key to putting it all in perspective. I can literally go through this quote and name examples of each of these points happening in my own life at some time.

I just wanted to express my personal gratitude for all the challenges, trials, and problems I have been given the oppurtunity to overcome by a loving Heavenly Father. He does NOT bring contention, sin, sorrow, or pain into our lives. But he does not always prevent them (because he can, he has that power). He allows the things of this world to affect us, to test us, and to try us. I am grateful for this blessing. Because of this I am stronger because I do not rely on myself but on a greater power. I have more faith, because I have tested it time and time again. Just when I have thought all was lost, he has made a way for me to solve, overcome, cope or simply to bear my problems with peace and understanding in my heart. I am grateful for his love, mercy, and wisdom and that has made all the difference.

Spiritual Sundays: I'm Hungry

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled [with the Holy Ghost]
~Matthew 5:6 [3 Nephi 12:6]

I was preparing for a Sunday School lesson and  I  read this scripture for it, when my stomach actual growled. It was telling me it was nearing dinner time. It seemed to me an adequate object lesson. Just as I involuntarily get hunger and thirsty, because my body needs these things. I should be hungering and thirsting for righteousness in the same way.

This scripture is of course from the Beatitudes told to us by Christ in the Sermon on the Mount and further elaborated on when Christ told them to the prophet Nephi. I love that Nephi made sure to include the detail about what we will be filled with. The Holy Ghost. What an amazing blessing.
I need to work harder at satisfying my own hunger and thirst for righteousness, often the hunger pains dull if I ignore it long enough. I know I pay for that in the end. Just like eating poorly takes its toll on the body, not filling up spiritually can leave me feeling disconnected from God.

It is amazing to me how after being on a poor spiritual diet, one day I sit down to read the scriptures, pour my heart out in prayer, listen to a talk, hear a touching song, or just read an inspirational book or magazine. I can feel the Spirit first nudge me, then pour into me like an empty vessel and all at once I feel what I have been missing. Like a warm blanket the Spirit envelops me and fills me up, often to overflowing with tears.

I chastise myself for waiting so long to 'eat', I hadn't realized how hungry I really was.

Use Me Lord

I love this song. Sometimes I feel like I don't serve others enough; between homeschooling and regular family activities-where do I find the time? When the boys were younger I started to pray, everyday, that God would use me to serve others. I began to look for small ways to serve others around me; Brownies to a neighbor, letting someone cut in line or just smiling. Service does not always have to be some huge life altering task you have performed, it is often just simple day to day blessings that you give to those around you. I still pray that prayer and God has truly opened up opportunities for me to serve that fit into my life.

Along with serving others, God has taught me how to let others serve me. I am so bad at accepting help, but getting better at receiving it graciously. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of humility. It allows others the chance to love you more greatly and in profound and meaningful ways.

I can honestly say the people I love the most are those I have served. Sometimes I did not love them right away, but I learned to love them through the service I gave them.

"And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." Mosiah 2:17
